2012 FMQ Challenge - August

I have drawn this design from Wendy Sheppard's tutorial on Jesters' hats lots of times, but it is only the looming deadline of the end of the month that has made me sew it.

I actually found it easier to sew than draw - go figure!  Even so, I still need to work on the consistency of my stitch length and spacing.  Some of the jesters' hats are pretty wonky, but I found it easier to do big round hats with lots of swirls.  I think the really wonky ones happened when I was trying to get out of an area.

I am making a quilt for my sister - still need to add a six inch white border after the red border.  It should end up being 230 x 260 cm.  I'm planning on quilting the white squares with some of the motifs from Don Linn's book, Sophisticated Stitches, but I can't figure out how to print any of the motifs from the Kindle version of the book.  Any ideas anyone?

I'll also try a feather border in the outer white border.  Does anyone have any other suggestions for quilting this?

Auditioning the borders

I have finally finished the body of the double nine patch quilt for my sister.

Not every join is perfect, but they're not too bad  (just don't look too closely).

I have three border options.  Which do you think is best?

Narrow red border, wide white border and red binding - option 1

Narrow white border, narrow red border then wide white border and red binding - option 2

Wide white border, red binding - option 3

Finaly, the main body of the quilt is done.

Anyone know how to turn this photo around?

I am finally down to the last four double nine patches.  I am still bored.  It is so repetitive and I am still so imprecise.  I've had to unpick quite a few times.  You would think that by now I would have it down pat.  No.

The original plan was to do 7 * 7 double nine patches on point, but I've revised it down to 6 * 7.  I think that's all I can actually quilt and it will end up being slightly over queen size in the end.  So, to join the double nine patches to more white squares.  Does that make it a triple nine patch?  Did I mention I was bored?

 Hopefully the wool batting will arrive this week and I can ponder how to quilt this creature.  Any ideas?
