The week didn't start off very well, with my bad Billie dog pulling me off my push bike and slamming me into a wooden bollard. I suspect I might have a small fracture in my ribs, although they didn't find anything in the x-rays at the hospital. I've also got skin missing all down my left arm. Bad Billie.
Today I finally finished quilting the blocks in the body of the double nine patch quilt for my sister. Hooray! I've started on the feather border, using high tech tools to mark the curves for the feather spine.
I've sewn one spine so far and one side of the feathers. I'm still undecided on what to do with the corners and whether or not I should complete the other side of the feathers. I quite like it this way. Maybe piano keys on the inner side of the borders or maybe nothing. I'd love to hear your suggestions.
I've also quilted some more of the GMFG blocks. The real colour is somewhere between these two photos. I think my favourite quilting block so far is the green one, which I quilted using a chrysanthemum quilting design by Angela Walters.
Both quilts are coming along spendidly! I really love the GFG and I'm not a hexie kind of person, so yours must be really special. Hope you heal quickly!
ReplyDeleteBoth are beautiful. I love the white and red.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilts! My sister-in-law just sent me a package of pre-cut hexies that her grandmother was going to turn into a quilt many years ago. Her dream is to have them made into mini quilts for each of her kids and elected me to help with that process! So, I'll be learning English Paper Piecing soon. OH my! Do you draw your own feathers? I've only used stencils or printed templates from quilting designs on my computer, but have some of the tools to do it myself. Someday... Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth. I joined my hexies with a running stitch, rather than EPP. I actually quite enjoyed it, but don't think I would have had the patience to EPP them:)
DeleteFor the feathers, I just drew in the spine then Fmqed the feathers. They're not perfect but after lots of drawing practice, I'm pretty happy with them.
I love both of your quilts. I do think you need to quilt something on the inside of your feather spine, the piano key idea is great perhaps 1/2" spacing. If you don't you will get a lot of puckering when the quilt is laundered. The GMFG quilt is stunning. I love the chrysanthemum quilt motif that Angela teaches. It gives so much texture to a quilt. Very nice job.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cindy. I do think piano keys would look nice, but my marking pen is almost out, so I'll do feathers on the other side. More practice?
DeleteBoth quilts are beautiful - I like you feathered border...maybe both sides would look good...if you do piano keys.. how far apart would you sew them...then I just read your reply to Cindy - feathers both side :)
ReplyDeleteForgot to say - Hope you are feeling better soon ..
